Autologous platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections were first used in 1987 in open heart surgery. Today, PRP injections have been safely used in many fields including sports medicine, orthopaedics, fasciomaxillary, urology as well as aesthetic medicine.
What is PRP?
Our own blood is made of plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Platelets are small discoid cells which contain granules. These granules contain clotting and growth factors. During the healing process, the platelets are activated, subsequently release these growth factors which stimulate inflammatory cascade and healing process.
Blood typically contains 6% platelets whereas PRP has a significantly increased supra-physiological platelet concentration. Studies have shown that clinical benefit can be obtained if the PRP used has an increased platelet concentration of 4x greater than normal blood.
What is the process of the treatment?
Prior to treatment a simple blood sample of 10 – 30 mls is extracted from the patient. This blood is immediately placed in the centrifuge for 5 – 8 minutes. When centrifugation is complete your plasma will be separated from your red blood cells. The rich platelets are extracted from the base of the plasma gel. The platelets are injected into the deep dermis or fat layer of the skin. Platelets gradually increase collagen which can increase skin thickness and overall health of the skin.

How long will the whole process take?
The whole process should only take 30 – 40 minutes. Proper centrifugation is needed to make sure the highest quality of PRP with the most platelet count is obtained for best results.
How long will the effects last?
Unlike other aesthetic treatments, results from PRP treatment can be lasting. This regenerative treatment help your cells to regrow and renew, thus a new life cycle for new cell is created. This delays the overall aging process. Your new skin cells provides you a younger and better skin and face which will last as long as you maintain it well.
How many sessions do I need?
Depends on your condition. Generally a treatment program of 3 – 4 sessions are recommended.
What should I expect after the treatment?
Due to the injection, certain areas of your skin might appear to be red and swollen. These common reactions of injection will fade away within hours. Rejuvenation will be observed. Gradual improvement noticed on skin texture, skin tone and wrinkles will be noticed after each sessions.
Am I suitable for this treatment?
Since blood is involved, anyone with any kind of possible blood-borne disease is not suitable for this treatment. Besides this risky group, generally everyone can be treated with PRP. Kindly consult your doctor to know your compatibility.
